Moldavia was an independent province until the mid 19th century when it came together with Wallachia to form the basis of the first Romanian state. In the foothills of northern Moldavia stand a series of highly painted monasteries built in the 15th and 16th centuries. The vivid paintings depict Biblical scenes, with were designed to instruct the illiterate populace about the Orthodox religion.
These monasteries are set in wonderful scenery - wooded hills, green valleys, rivers. The area is at its best in spring for the wild flowers and in autumn when the colors change to russet. The norther region of Moldavia has become famous mainly for the fascinating frescoes of the monasteries of Voronet, Arbore, Humor, Sucevita, Moldovita and for the beautiful Putna abbey. They are the evidence of the more than 500 years long continuity of the spiritual life in our country.
